OVERVIEW

When talking regarding Hindu “pilgrimage tours in India” the name of Himalayas comes to mind without delay for its mountains since time immemorial has have spiritual connotations close to it. Also, known as the ultimate abode of Gods, the tours in this land is highly taxing. One such significant and pilgrimage yatra which takes place yearly in July-August to the abode of Lord Shiva at Amarnath Caves in Jammu and Kashmir. The most renowned and the most religious of all Hindu pilgrimages “Char Dham Yatra” includes visit to four sacred abode of almighty at Badrinath, Kedarnath, Gangotri and Yamunotri. Other recognized Hindu pilgrimage places in the country are Vaishno Devi, Haridwar, Varanasi, Rishikesh, Vrindavan and more.
“Char Dham” is referred to the 4 Hindu religious destinations in Garhwal Himalayas, Uttarakhand state of India. These are Yamuntori, Gangotri, Badrinath and Kedarnath. Be located in the circuit of magnificent Himalayas, these four designations are the holy center of spiritual activity in north-India. Conventionally, the “Char Dham Yatra” is start from the West to East. Accordingly, the Yatra begin point from Yumunotri, after that going on to Gangotri and to end with Kedarnath and Badrinath. Yamunotri and Gangotri are devoted to goddess Yamuna and Ganga respectively. Alternatively, Kedarnath is devoted to Lord Shiva while Badrinath is devoted to Lord Vishnu. In addition, tourists like too visit Hemkund Sahib in the surrounding area, which is one of the highest, sited spiritual sites in the country. So, pilgrims visit all these designations in desire of washing away their sins and to achieve salvation, with the blessings of the Lord.

ITINERARY DETAILS

DAY 01: ARRIVAL HARIDWAR – BARKOT (205 km/ 7 to 8 hrs)

On arrival in Haridwar railway station, meet our representative who helps you with transfer to your first destination, Barkot. Barkot is an attractive hill-station which is placed on the foot of Yamunotri. As you drive during Mussoorie, you can visit the well-known Kempty Falls on your way. On arrival, check-in to your hotel and freshening up. Relax of the day and refresh for the yatra of Yamunotri the next day. After dinner, overnight stay at hotel in Barkot.

DAY 02: BARKOT – YAMUNOTRI – BARKOT (36 km drive/ 6 km trek)

After morning breakfast, here you will start the yatra of Yamunotri. You have a choice of hiring palki or a horse (own pay) for your trek. On entrance by afternoon in Yamunotri take holy dip in Yamuna River and perform pooja. Return back through the same way back to Barkot hotel.
After dinner, overnight stay at hotel in Barkot.

Yamunotri Temple: The original Yamunotri Temple is said to have been built by Maharani Guleria of Jaipur in the 19th century. However, there are stories of it being constructed by Maharaja Pratap Shah of Tehri Garhwal. Due to destruction by weather and the elements, the temple has been renovated a couple of times. Yamunotri Dham’s mythological significance is narrated in a popular legend that is related to sage Asit Muni who lived here and used to bathe in the Ganges and the Yamuna River daily. In his old age, he was unable to go to Gangotri, thus a stream of the Ganges appeared opposite Yamunotri for him. Also, Goddess Yamuna is said to be the daughter of Surya Dev (the Sun God) and sister of Yama (the God of Death). It is believed that worshipping the Yamuna would also please Sun God and Yama.
Surya Kund: There are a Number of thermal springs near temple, which flows into numerous pools. The most important of these is Surya Kund.

DAY 03: BARKOT – UTTARKASHI (80 km/ 3 hrs journey)

After breakfast, check-out from the Barkot hotel and drive to Uttarkashi. On the entrance check-in the hotel and freshening up. Uttarkashi is positioned on the banks of river Bhagirathi and is famous for its historical monuments, Temples and Ashrams. In the sunset, visit the well-known Vishwanath Temple. After dinner, overnight stay at hotel in Uttarkashi.

Vishwanath Temple: Vishwanath temple is one of the oldest Shiva temples in Northern India. Re-constructed in 1857 by Maharani Khaneti Devi of Tehri State in the ancient architectural style. It is situated at the heart of the town. A massive iron trident, symbolic of divine mother’s, is erected and worshiped from time immemorial at the temple complex. Ganeshji, Sakshi Gopal, Markandeya Rishi’s small shrines are also part of the temple complex. Akhand Jyoti as well as Akhand Abhishek, special aarti at morning and evening are offered. As per Skunda Puran, Uttarkashi is known as ‘Saumya Varanasi’, the abode of Lord Shiva in Kaliyug and counted as one of the twelve Jyotirlingas.
Shakti Temple: Right in front of the Vishwanath temple is Shakti temple. It has a big ‘Trishul’ of about 6 meters in height and a circumference of 90 cms. At bottom. Though there are different views about the making of this, the upper part of it seems to be made up of iron and the lower one is of copper. As per the epics this Shakti was thrown on the devils by the Goddess Durga (Shakti), hence it gets its name. Since then this Shakti is erected over here.

DAY 04: UTTARKASHI – GANGOTRI – UTTARKASHI (100 km/ 3 to 4 hrs each side)

Early morning breakfast and drive to Gangotri. Upon entrance at Gangotri take a holy dip in the sacred river Ganges which is also called Bhagirathi at its origin. Visit the Gangotri Temple.
After performing pooja, late afternoon drive back to Uttarkashi.
After dinner, overnight stay at hotel in Uttarkashi.

Gangotri Temple: According to the legend, King Sagara decided to perform an Ashwamedha Yagna (Horse sacrifice ritual performed by Kings) after slaying demons on Earth. The horse which had to be slayed was to be accompanied by his 60000 sons born to Queen Sumati and one son Asamanja born to his second queen Kesani, on an uninterrupted journey around the Earth. Indra, the God of the Devas (Celestial beings) was afraid that he might lose his throne if this Yajna became a success and stole the horse and tied it to the ashram of Sage Kapil, who was then in deep meditation. The sons upon finding the horse in the Sage’s ashram were infuriated and stormed the ashram with rage. When the sage opened his eyes, he cursed all the 60,000 sons into perishing. Bhagiratha, the grandson of King Sagara is believed to have performed deep penance for centuries to please Goddess Ganga to wash away his ancestors’ sins and grant them Moksha or salvation. The Shrine of Gangotri opens during the last week of April or the first week of May, on the auspicious day of Akshaya Tritiya. The temples opening is preceded by a special Puja of Ganga both inside the temple as well as on the riverbank. The temple closes on the day of Diwali followed by a formal closing ceremony amidst a row of oil lamps. It is believed that the Goddess retreats to Mukhwa, her winter abode (12 km downstream). In summer, Gangotri Temple is open for devotees from 6:15 am to 2 pm and 3 pm to 9:30 pm
As winter approaches the Gangotri Temple open from 6:45 am to 2 pm and 3 pm to 7 pm Mangala Arti is done by priests at 6 am behind the closed doors and it is not open for public. Sandhya Aarti is performed at Gangotri at 7:45 pm during summer and at 7 pm as winter approaches. Special pooja is done on Janmashtami, Vijayadashami and Diwali.

DAY 05: UTTARKASHI – GUPTKASHI (240 km/ 9 to 10 hrs)

Depart for your next destination, Guptkashi after having your breakfast early in the daybreak.
On reaching, check-in to the hotel and freshening up. Guptkashi is placed at a distance of 47 km from the holy shrine, Kedarnath. The town holds immense religious importance as it houses well-known ancient temples like Vishwanath Temple and Ardhnareshwar Temple.
After dinner, overnight stay at hotel in Guptkashi.

Guptakashi: The name Gupt Kashi means “Hidden Benares. Mythology describes how when the Pandava brothers were searching for a glimpse of Shiva, Shivji first concealed himself at Guptkashi, but later fled from them further up the valley to Kedarnath, where the Pandavas finally got their wish fulfilled.

DAY 06: GUPTKASHI – SONPRAYAG – KEDARNATH

Early sunrise after breakfast, check-out from the hotel, and drive to Sonprayag. From where, you will start your 19 km trek to Kedarnath. On arrival, check-in at hotel and after freshening up, visit to Kedarnath temple and attend the aarti.
After dinner, overnight stay at hotel in Kedarnath.

Kedarnath: The Kedarnath shrine, one of the 12 jyotirlingas of Lord Shiva, is a scenic spot situated, against the backdrop of the majestic Kedarnath range. Kedar is another name of Lord Shiva. According to legend, the Pandavas after having won over the Kaurava in the Kurukshetra war, felt guilty of having killed their own brothers and sought the blessings of Lord Shiva for redemption. He eluded them repeatedly and while fleeing took refuge at Kedarnath in the form of a bull. On being followed he dived into the ground, leaving his hump on the surface.

DAY 07: KEDARNATH – SONPRAYAG – GUPTKASHI

Early sunrise you get up before dawn and after taking bath you are at the temple by 4:45 am for the ‘Abhishek’ to Kedarnath Shiva. After darshan and pooja, you come out of the temple and go back to the hotel. Afterward you will begin the go back trek of 19 km from Kedarnath to Sonprayag.
The vehicles wait for you in Sonprayag car parking and drive to your hotel at Guptkashi.
After dinner, overnight stay at hotel in Guptkashi.

DAY 08: GUPTKASHI – BADRINATH (162 km/ 5 to 6 hrs)

This sunrise, you check-out of the hotel at 06:00 am and start driving towards your next destination, Badrinath. On the arrival, check-in to the hotel and freshening up.
After freshening up, visit to Badri Vishal temple and attend the aarti.
Return back and after dinner, overnight stay at hotel in Badrinath.

Badrinath is situated in the lap of Nar-Narayan Parvat, with the towering Neelkanth peak (6,597mts.) in the background. Also known as the Vishal Badri, the largest among the five Badri’s, it is revered by all as the apt tribute to Lord Vishnu. It is believed that to revive the lost prestige of Hinduism and to unite the country in one bond, Adi Guru Sri Shankaracharya built four pilgrimage centers in four corners of India. Among them were Badri ashram (Badrinath temple) in the north, Rameswaram in the south, Dwarakapuri in the west and Jagannath Puri in the east. Badrinath situated at an elevation of 3,133 mts. is considered to be amongst the most pious. The revered spot was once carpeted with wild berries which gave it the name ‘Badri Van’ meaning ‘forest of berries.’ Built by Adi Shankaracharya, the philosopher-saint of the 8th century, the temple has been renovated several times due to damage by avalanches and restored in the 19th century by the royal houses of Scindia & Holkar. The main entrance gate is colorful & imposing popularly known as Singhdwar.

DAY 09: BADRINATH – MANA – JOSHIMATH – RUDRAPRAYAG – SRINAGAR

Early morning visit to temple and after darshan & pooja, return back to hotel and take your breakfast. After breakfast, check-out the hotel and first visit to Mana village; Mana is a last Indian village from the border of India and Tibet/ China in the Himalayas. Also visit to Ganesh & Parvati caves. After sightseeing, drive to Srinagar. In-route; visit to Shri Shankracharya Math in Joshimath. Also visit to Rudrapryag is one of the Panch Prayag (five confluences) of Alaknanda River. It is confluence of rivers Alaknanda and Mandakini. Kedarnath, a Hindu holy town is located 86 km from Rudraprayag.
On arrival Srinagar, check-in to the hotel and freshening up.
After dinner, overnight stay at hotel in Srinagar.

DAY 10: SRINAGAR – RISHIKESH – HARIDWAR DEPARTURE
