Historical Context: The temple is dedicated to the deity, Hadimba, who was married to Bhima of the Pandavas of Mahabharata. Hadimba lived in Manali with her brother Hadimb and had vowed to marry the man who defeated her brother in a battle. While the Pandavas were in exile, they stayed in Himachal for a brief period, which is when Hadimb attacked Bhima. The brother was killed at this time, and soon after, Bhima married Hadimba. They have a child named Ghatotkacha. In the final years of her life, it is believed that Hadimba retired into the woods and meditated at Dhungri Van Vihar, which is where the temple was built in 1553. It is because of this reason it's also called the Dhungri Temple.
