Leh, a high-desert city in the Himalayas, is the capital of the Leh region in northern India’s Jammu and Kashmir state. Originally a stop for trading caravans, Leh is now known for its Buddhist sites and nearby trekking areas. Massive 17th-century Leh Palace, modeled on the Dalai Lama’s former home (Tibet’s Potala Palace), overlooks the old town’s bazaar and mazelike lanes.
Sangam Valley is a 48 kilometre drive from Leh and is the confluence of the rivers Indus and Zanskar. Just the view of Sangam Valley from the road above it can make you swoon in ecstasy.
The colours of the two rivers can be distinctly seen at the confluence. It is an amazing place to sit, relax, and enjoy a picnic with family and friends.
Nimmu is a beautiful valley that marks the confluence of the Indus River and Zanskar River. The Indus River drains the dry and deserted terrains of Ladakh's landlocked valley and serves as its lifeline. Zanskar, on the other hand, is a tributary of this river and merges into it from the north-eastern direction. On its way to the meeting point, the river passes through the spectacular Zanskar Gorge, which is a dream destination for trekkers.
Situated about 150 km to the north of Leh, the Nubra Valley is an isolated region that is a major highlight of the tourism circuit of Ladakh. This valley is located at the confluence of the Shyok and Siachen rivers, where Ladakh is separated from the Karakoram mountain range. To the north of this picturesque valley lies Siachen, which is a beautiful glacier that falls under the disputed territory of Kashmir. The north-western region of this valley is bordered by Sasser and Karakoram passes, the latter formed an integral part of the ancient trade route between India and China. These passes connect the Nubra Valley to Xinjiang – a mountainous Chinese province. The last accessible hamlet of this valley is Panamik, which has an old monastery and several hot springs of sulphur-rich water. The valley with unique topography is a beautiful destination worth exploring during a visit to Leh.
Zanskar the Virgin Valley is one of the most fascinating destinations in the tourism circuit of Leh and Ladakh. It is situated to the southwest of Leh and southeast of Kargil. Regarded as a place with distinct topography and surprising panorama, this semi-desert area falls in the northern territory of the Himalayas. It is flanked by Doda and Kargyag rivers, which are tributaries of the Zanskar River. High mountain passes, huge rocks, sprawling vales, gurgling streams and verdant meadows dominate the landscape of this pristine valley. The rough and less trodden terrains of this region provide a brilliant opportunity for trekking and mountaineering while its gushing rivers serve as perfect venues for white water rafting. Owing to its harsh climatic conditions, this place stays almost inaccessible for most parts of the year. Visitors coming to Zanskar have to drive a mettle road or trek the scenic route that leads to the region.
There is not so much happening for nightlife in Leh. Do not expect anything like a nightclub, a casino, a theater, live music, adult spots, or a disco. Most people just go to a restaurant or café and hang out with their friends drinking tea, soft drinks, or coffee.
It is pleasant to look at the sky at night. From this altitude with little light pollution, the moon and the stars look so near as if one could almost touch them. Leh is the perfect place to watch shooting stars. Bring a telescope with you to enjoy the night sky the most.
Some of the restaurants in Leh have an outdoor seating area where you can enjoy having a delicious meal, some drinks, and looking at the beautiful night sky while dining as well.
The small shops catering to the tourist trade stay open until 9 or 10 p.m. at night. There are craft shops, scarf and shawl outlets, and internet cafes where the net may or may not be working. There are lots of international food restaurants.
Don’t stay out too late because wild dogs take to the streets after 10 p.m. There are lots of them. They might be harmless or might not. It is a good idea to carry a flashlight with you because the streets can be very dark at night with dangerous holes, open drains, and uneven pavement that can cause you to trip and fall.
You may or you may not be able to find a booze party because they are illegal and subject to disappearing as fast as they show up. The Hotel Sun Ray is sort of camouflaged (maybe for valid reasons!) and you have to pay off some people to get in.
Keep in mind, if the place is busted, you’ll be arrested and have to pay a bribe to get out of the troubles. So, that’s something to be considered before going to these illegal parties.
Editor’s note: The information contained on this page was compiled using real traveler reviews about nightlife in Leh.
No visa restriction but you need to get Inner Line Permit from Leh DC office for covering Inner Line Areas like Nubra Valley, Pangong Tso, Tso Moriri, Drok Pa Sectors etc.
